Dr. Sharon (Sherry) Burcham is the founder of A+ Achievement, an educational leadership consulting firm. She serves as a Professional Development Associate with the Leadership and Learning Center, a Master Data Coach for SchoolNet and Leadership Capacity, and a professional developer for Renaissance Learning, Inc. Sherry is motivated by a belief that a quality education can and should assure that every child reaches their maximum potential as a productive citizen and life-long learner in a dynamic global society. Her goal is to serve and assist school leaders and systems everywhere in raising student achievement and stakeholder satisfaction by promoting continuous improvement, especially through the use of technology. Sherry retired in 2004 after more than 33 years in Maryland public school education, and 23 years experience as a school and district level administrator. She has teaching and administrative experience which spans preschool through college. Her last position was assistant director of curriculum and instruction at the elementary level for one of the highest performing school systems in Maryland – a national leader in education.
During her tenure in the Maryland public schools, Dr. Burcham was skillful in obtaining short term results that led to long term improvements through the use of teamwork, collaboration, and participative decision making; clear, measurable, and realistically high goals; quality formative and summative assessments aligned with curriculum standards and instruction; and efficient data collection, reporting, and analysis for knowledge based decision making. Sherry’s vignette of her highly successful application of Mike Schmoker’s tenets of continuous school improvement was published in his “The Results Fieldbook.”
Dr. Burcham earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from NOVA University, a Master of Education degree in human development and a Bachelor of Science degree with high honors in early childhood education from the University of Maryland. She is an active member and holds leadership positions in several Maryland state professional organizations including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, International Reading Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Sherry lives with her husband, Jim, a Certified Financial Planner and cofounder of Medallion Investment Services, in their second “Jim-built” house in Dunkirk, Maryland, close to their three grown children, Justin, Shannon, and Shelby. She credits much of her success to the steadfast support and assistance from her husband and family. Sherry enjoys reading, computing, solving puzzles, playing golf, exercising, and learning new things.
